"A HISTORY OF
ST PAUL A.M.E. CHURCH"

The Faith Inspiration Choir  was formed by Rev. Bean with Kenny Banks as the director.  Wanda Brown, a faithful member and Steward named the choir.  Other choirs which are part of the music program at St. Paul are the Women's Chorale, and the Male Chorus.  At a performance at the Columbus Convention Center the Male Chorus' singing so inspired Maya Angelou that she requested a copy of one of their tapes.  The Male Chorus celebrated 30 years of service in 1998.  It presented a moving concert in honor of Clarence Edwards who was their director for twenty-two years..

Rev. Bean opened the door to new ministries that reach many different communities.  One is the Prison Ministry founded by Barbara Colvin which occasionally invites the Faith Inspiration Choir and the Male Chorus to join them for services and concerts at correctional institutions.  They have a schedule of institutions which they visit and minister to regularly.

Health Concerns Committee is another new ministry that was founded by Dr. Canise Bean, DMD.  It has held health screenings for women and men at the Church, started a fitness program disseminates health related information; and has sponsored the mobile mammogram unit from a local hospital to perform mammograms at St. Paul.

The  Alzheimer Ministry is coordinated by Juanita Whaley Cartier who provides information to the congregation.

St. Paul Players/Jam-n-JeffersonPark   St. Paul Players, a very creative ministry, is under the direction of JoAnn Roots.  She and others in the group write and direct some very meaningful and moving plays.

Jam-n-Jefferson Park is an annual summer weekend  event full of food, fun and entertainment.  On Sunday the worship experience (including Sunday School Classes) is held under a huge tent in the park.  Several persons who have attended the worship services have become members of the Church.  Rev Bean has also implemented annual "Revivals" which have renewed the hearts and spirits of the membership.

(Jam-n-Jefferson evolved from the annual Outdoor Festival held for many years on the Church's property.  Organizations displayed and sold various items on one Saturday.)

In September 1996,  St Paul hosted the 166th Ohio Annual Conference including the Sunday closing service in the Sanctuary.  The stewardship, cooperation and love of the St. Paul family during the week long conference so inspired Rev. Bean and the St. Paul Family that a Leadership Unity Sunday Sunday was planned for the first Sunday in December 1996 to celebrate the spirit of stewardship and love. The Church's theme                          "A People Ready for Ministry" fits the spirit of stewardship and love of the St. Paul Family as we enter the 21st Century with a faith that will not shrink

The AME motto, "God, Our Father, Christ, Our Redeemer, Man, Our Brother," is committed to the belief that all men and women are created equal.  It is to this end that St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Columbus is dedicated.
