" A HISTORY OF

ST. PAUL A.M.E. CHURCH"

Over the years, there have been many persons who have recorded the History of St. Paul A.M.E. Church.
Rev. Michael R. Bean and the Trustee Board saw the need to update our history and asked me to take on the project. In an attempt to update several versions, I have reviewed many publications, including a 1923 publication of the History of St. Paul; a version by Mrs. Louise Hill, the first woman Steward; and a version by Mr. Raymond Davis. I’ve also interviewed Mrs. Josephine Chandler, Mr. Raymond Jackson, Mrs. Verna Turner, Mrs. Hester Bailey Williams, Mr. Everett Sanders, Sr., Mrs. Merzell McGhee, and Mrs. Juanita Whaley Cartier.

There are a few historical pictures included in this booklet; however, there are many others on display in the Annex. A rich history is shown through photos in our church directories which have been published over the years.

Please note it was not possible to distinguish who wrote what portion of the history and also to determine when it was written. However, it is important to acknowledge that there were many who contributed.  My sincere thanks to everyone for their time and information. Working on this booklet has brought me a lot of joy especially when I’ve interviewed our elders and see them smile as they reminisce about the part they or their family have played in the history of the Church.  I pray this booklet is received with love as it is given.

Nancy Winfrey Thomas,

Trustee (November 1998).
