Waiting Upon the Lord

We have all heard the expression, "Timing is everything," which can apply whether we're talking about battle, business, or basketball. When we refer to living the Christian life, God's timing is absolutely essential if we are to walk in obedience and keep in step with His will. Waiting upon the Lord means pausing for further instructions, and it goes hand in hand with trusting Him. Proverbs 3:5-6 Such determined stillness will prepare us for what God wants to give us in life, and it is also a way to sift our motives.

How are we to wait?

* Patiently (Psalm 37:7; Hebrews 6:15; Romans 8:25)

* Quietly (Lamentations 3:26 )

* Trusting (Isaiah 8:17; Psalm 38:15)

* Expectantly (Psalm 5:3, 33:20 ; Micah 7:7 )

* Steadfastly (Psalm 112:7; Isaiah 26:3)

* Courageously (Psalm 27:14; Acts 27:25)

* Standing on God's Word  (Psalm 130:5 ; Isaiah 26:8 )

Neglecting to wait can cause severe consequences: we can get out of God's will or delay His planned blessing; we can bring pain and suffering to ourselves or others; we can lose out financially or relationally; we can miss opportunities; and life can seem like total confusion.

On the other hand, waiting upon God has definite rewards:

1. We discover God's will and purpose. (Lamentations 3:25; Jeremiah 29:11 )

2. God gives supernatural strength and energy. (Isaiah 40:28-31 )

3. He will fight our battles for us. (Psalm 37:9, 34 )

4. Our prayers will be answered. (Psalm 40:1-3)

5. Our faith is fulfilled. (Isaiah 49:23; Philippians 1:6)

6. We see God working in our behalf. (Isaiah 64:1-4 )

In order to wait upon the Lord and submit to His ways and timing, we must have

* Faith ( Isaiah 55:8-9)

* Patience (Psalm 40:1)

* Courage (Psalm 31:24)

Though it may be tempting to move ahead, stand in position until receiving further orders. This is not wasting time, but a deliberate decision of faith.

Question for Reflection:

What makes it hardest for you to wait for the Lord's timing—fear of failure? the temptation to follow your own schedule? other people's suggestions or opinions?
