Pentecost

PICTURE OF DOVE

Sunday, May 15 is the celebration of PENTECOST.  The story of Pentecost can be found in the first chapters of the Book of Acts.  Fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus, the Disciples were together in the Upper Room when a very unusual manifestation of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit came upon them.

Unusual things happened to them and they were caught up in feelings of elation and joy and happiness.  Through this experience all the disciples were transformed, changed from weak, cowardly individuals to people who were bold and strong and courageous.

Since their Lord’s death, they had been meeting in secret, afraid of the Jews and Romans, but after Pentecost, they moved out into the open to talk about and preach what mighty things God had done in Jesus Christ, their Lord.

They preached that Christ was the Messiah, the anointed one, sent from God, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself but that he had been shamefully crucified, brought about by the connivance of the leaders of his own people.

But God wrought the mightiest deed of all time on raising Him from the dead and proving to all mankind the might and power of the eternal God.

Pentecost is the birthday of the Christian Church, for it was a turning point in the lives of the followers of Jesus. They were ready to lay their lives on the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE, offered by God through Jesus Christ.

The Liturgical color for Pentecost is Red, symbolizing blood, fire and Christian zeal.
