While incarcerated at the Ohio Women’s Reformatory, Rev. Colvin conceived a prison ministry which would reach out to those incarcerated by feeding them spiritually, and once on the outside assist them with clothing, housing, employment and nurturing as they strive to be accepted into the mainstream society. St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Columbus, Ohio under the direction of the Pastor Reverend Dr. Michael R. Bean provided the arena for Rev. Colvin’s dream to take shape. She founded the prison ministry in 1994 and since then has served numerous individuals and their families. The prison ministry also works to increase awareness of the spiritual and social needs facing inmates. It further demonstrates how the churches, courts, corrections, and other organizations can assist on a daily basis. This ministry has received rave reviews, serves as a model for other churches through out the state of Ohio and has resulted in consultation being offered to many churches, organizations and partnerships with local and state agencies. This consulting and training will utilize the 23 years of knowledge and skills gained to make all of the programs offered, very successful. |
