CONGRATULATIONS!

The St. Paul Church family is cordially invited to share this great honor with Kim. She will be honored on Friday, August 1, 2008 at the Living Witness Awards Dinner held during the 62nd Annual Third District Lay Meeting at the Crown Plaza Hotel, 33 E. 5th Street, Dayton,Ohio.

MISSIONARY EMPHASIS SUNDAY

Each year we try to make our Emphasis Day a unique experience for the Society, our church members and the community.

Our theme this year is:
Living Well--Aging Well---Serving Well

Our Missionary Emphasis Sunday will be held on July 27 at 11:00 a.m. We thus want our church members to be prepared and be on the same page with the Missionaries on that Great Day.

We will therefore be presenting excerpts on the theme each Sunday for your reflection.

As a follow up to last Sunday, Let us look at the obstacles of aging:

Let us look at experience! What is it? What does Older Adults bring to the table? “Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger as a brother; older women as mothers and younger women as sisters with all purity.” I Timothy 5:1

Experience is knowledge and skills resulting from a combination of life events, activities and endeavors. Experience is first hand knowledge, practices, training, reasoning, familiarity and exposure to a variety of facts and experiments.

Experience is exhibiting wisdom gained from various encounters, and events endured at different stages of life. The older population has not only had rich experiences in life, in the most part, they have lived creative and productive lives.

This commodity called ‘Experience,’ is vital in explaining one aspect of our theme: ‘Serving Well’ More importantly, for today’s generation to move forward, we should pay special attention to intergenerational activities.

Older adults will help bridge the gap between Science and Technology on one hand; and, Wisdom on the other. Such a mix will help younger generation develop better coping strategies to meet every day life situation.

We hope we are now ready and prepared to listen to the word by Dr. Ebony Boyce, our daughter and pride of Russell and Cheryl Boyce next Sunday. MISSIONARY EMPHASIS SUNDAY

Hosted by Becky Holliman and Cheryl Boyce

JUNIOR USHER BOARD

The St. Paul A.M.E Church Junior Usher Board consists of youth members from 3 years of age through high school.

We serve the church family on the second (2nd) Sunday of each month during the 7:45 a.m. morning service and the fourth (4th) Sunday of each month during the 11:00 a.m. morning service.

To serve the church family, we ask for a willing spirit and a smile. Our attire is a solid white top with solid black/dark blue pants/skirt.

We would like to stress the importance of uniformity thus reducing the distraction from the worship service. We invite all young people to come and serve the Lord through this ministry.

Ms Merzell McGhee, Mrs. Becky Holliman and Ms. Melanie James, Directors.

Note to High School students: this ministry counts towards the scholarship participation.

HEALTH CONCERNS COMMITTEE

Trying to kick the smoking habit? Consider some financial and health benefits “I’ve already thought of that!” you’ll say? Take a minute to read this and review the chart below.

The Ohio Tobacco Quits Line currently is a program of the Ohio Department of Health. With the telephone, face-to-face or online coaching - your choice - Ohioans are up to 8 times more likely to quit for good!

If you are a smoker or use tobacco, please call the Ohio Quits Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. The web site is also available: www.ohioquits.com with helpful information.

Presently OhioQuits is experiencing high call volume following a March announcement that the service would provide all Ohioans with a free two-week supply of nicotine patches upon enrollment in the program.

More than 7,000 Ohioans have called. Representatives are trying to manage the high volume of calls. Please be patient during this busy time.

If you call and have to leave a message, please know an OhioQuits Representative will return a call to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, if no live person is available, you can receive tips on line to help you prepare to quit.

UPDATE FROM THE COMMUNITY PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION:

The Community Property Development Corporation (CPDC), an affiliate of St. Paul AME Church, wishes to thank the members of the church for their commitment to the vision and purpose of the Gateway Health and Wellness Center. Without the cooperation and support of the church, the project could never have been completed.

To that end, we will monthly provide an update on the status of the project so that everyone can share and appreciate the work that is being done.

A. THE DOCTOR IS MOVING IN!

Dr. Mark White will be the primary care physician at the Wellness Center and is planning to begin by July 1. Construction is moving forward under the direction of Gary Elder. Ohio Health is committed to completing the cost of the construction and has also continued to pay rent on time. Dr. White will be joined in August by a female doctor and is also working toward the addition of a dentist for the center. HALLELUJAH!

B. CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL:

We have begun negotiating with Children’s Hospital for a youth obesity program to be housed at the Wellness Center. Although we don’t have the details yet, we expect it to begin before the end of the year.

C. MARYHAVEN:

Maryhaven Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services will be offering psychological services for senior citizens. A meeting is being planned to discuss this addition to the center and the details of this service will be included in the next update.

D. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

This economy is hitting all of us hard and the CPDC recognizes that we have a responsibility to do whatever we can to help. The CPDC has prepared a fact sheet of some of the services and resources for financial assistance this Sunday for anyone needing some help. Additionally, we are planning a series of summer workshops on financial topics to shed light on other community resources. Topics will include cash management, mortgage and foreclosure issues, car loans and leases, budgeting, etc.

E. FITNESS CENTER:

We are actively looking for a partner to construct a fitness center in the building. Our Health Concerns Committee, under the direction of Dr. Canise Bean, has graciously taken the lead on this. We will provide more info about this addition as we get it.

G. EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE BANQUET AND HEALTHFAIR:

We are in the preliminary stages of planning the next banquet with the addition of a health fair this September. Our theme this year will focus on Cancer. If anyone is interested in participating on the planning committee, please call the CPDC office at 614-223-0250.

H. FRIENDS OF THE GATEWAY:

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities to be an attendant at different Gateway events, please let us know. It is a great way to meet and mingle with different people that rent the Wellness Center and also help us maintain the building when we have visitors. Please contact Norzetta Bretz, Ex. Director to volunteer. 614-223-0250.

I. OPEN HOUSE DURING JAM-N-JEFFERSON PARK WEEK:

An open house for area event planners and community organizers will be held at the Gateway the week before Jam-n-Jefferson Park. More info to come.

GOD BLESS YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!

Church School invites you

Our Church School staff invites you to consider bringing your youth to Church School on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. We feel that the Church School gives young people a foundation for their spiritual growth. Bible based lessons are taught along with the Lord’s Prayer, 10 Commandments, Beatitudes and other Biblical scriptures.

We understand that Sunday is the only day many adults have for themselves or just to relax from the hectic week. But we are asking for only 75 minutes of the week’s 10,080 minutes to teach your youth about the Lord and fellowship with other children.   Just 75 minutes compared to the 840-1800 minutes young folks watch television. Just 75 minutes.   Won’t you come and bring your youth? Transportation can be arranged upon request.

Youth classes are located in the Undercroft.

The Open Shelter moved to 61 E. Mound Street behind St. John’s Church.   Their services and operating hours (Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.) will remain the same. Their evening meals program will still be located at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 501 E. Broad Street.

HOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE A CHRISTIAN??

A Christian can never be raging with hatred, intent on revenge, grim-faced without mercy or forgiveness.

No, a Christian will reveal sincerity through and through, throbbing with compassion and love, quick to smile and laugh, and always checking to make sure the spirit of Christ is in him or her.

Christ in us is the hope of  glory (see Colossians 1:27, NRSV).

TUESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY LESSON

There are several important elements that belong in a proper definition of inspiration:

(1) the divine element - God the Holy Spirit superintended the writers, ensuring the accuracy of the writing;

(2) the human element - human authors wrote according to their individual style and personalities;

(3) the result of the divine-human authorship is the recording of God's truth without error;

(4) inspiration extends to the selection of words by the writers;

(5) inspiration relates to the original manuscripts.

This is a sample of the studies offered each week during the Tuesday Night Bible Study held in the undercroft and lead by Brother Edwin Clay.

All officers and members are invited to join this thought provoking class as Brother Clay examines the Scriptures.

HELP WANTED

"To much is given, much is required." Your church needs some cheerful givers of their time and resources.

St. Paul has growing pains. There are many opportunities for new and existing members to help us be more efficient and effective in our ministries.

Money is part of our stewardship and a necessity, but we also need bodies to help move this church to "the NEXT LEVEL" in kingdom building.

Each Sunday, volunteer opportunities will be in the bulletin that are available to anyone that has the skill and the inclination to help. Every member in this church should be responsible for at least ONE task to assist the church.

Perhaps you have accounting, word processing, teaching, or other business skills. Perhaps you are creative and can teach a class in art to increase our income.

Perhaps you can help the pastor with the sick and shut in visitation. Perhaps you can help with the custodial duties. Everyone can do something!

Please fill out the blank below and put it in the offering plate, turn it in at the office or give it to a Trustee or Steward.

FROM YOUR HEALTH CONCERNS COMMITTEE

FIVE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FACTORS REDUCE HEART DISEASE RISK

According to a recent study published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, men who followed five healthy lifestyle habits for a period of 16 years reduced their risk of heart disease by 87 percent.

Of 42,847 men, ages 40 to 75, who were free chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, participated in the study.

87 percent of the men were at a lower risk when they adhered to these five factors of a heart-healthy lifestyle:

▸ not smoking
▸ maintaining a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25 kg/m2
▸ exercising daily for at least 30 minutes
▸ drinking alcohol in moderation, defined as half a drink to two drinks a day, on average (nondrinkers were not included)
▸ eating healthfully

The study found that 62 percent of coronary events may have been prevented if all men in the study population adhered to all five healthy lifestyle factors.

Healthy lifestyle are encouraged throughout peoples lives, but the study showed that its never too late to make changes to become healthier.

Too much weight could put you at risk for some chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

BENEVOLENCE:  ARE YOU REALLY YOUR BROTHER'S KEEPER?

No one will ever forget September 11, 2001.  That was a day when the world stood in horror as thousands of people died from terrorism.  The entire world opened up their pocketbooks to help the individuals and families hurt by the events.

However, life is tough everywhere.  It's hard for many folk in Columbus, at the corner of Jefferson and Long. St. Paul has become a beacon of light for the homeless, the ex-offender, the unwed mother, the alcoholic and the addicted. We have taken our role seriously and with a Christ like commitment. We have accepted the responsibility of our church to our membership and the community that declares we are our brother's keeper.

Yet, the traditional $1.00 in the collection plate is not enough to cover the uses of the "consecrated offering".  That dollar doesn’t even buy a loaf of bread these days.  This isn't news.  The cost of living is much higher today.  The sources of funding are much less than before and the need is much larger.  If you add to that the number of unemployed people due to downsizing and businesses closing their doors, benevolence is a very expensive proposition.

We are taught by Christ to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and administer to the sick.  Food is expensive; clothing is expensive and let’s not even talk about healthcare.  It's unreachable to many people.

We must, as Christians understand that any deficit in our Benevolent Fund is due to the increasing need for the funds.  We cannot turn our head and pretend like our kindness and generosity and humanity is not important and critical to the community.  It is very important and we must take our commitment to the next level.

One dollar a week is not enough to pay rent for some folks, to buy a bed for others and to pay legal fees for still others. Some need prescriptions filled and others need to feed their children. The list of what St. Paul is doing is endless and should be commended by all. Praise God that we have the resources to live up to our commitment.

We must increase our benevolent giving because the needs are at an all-time high. Instead of $1.00, give as much as you can. It is clear that the world has changed and many people have a hard time holding on. With our programmatic help and our financial support, we can do what Jesus would want us to do:

Be Our Brother's Keeper

A Message from the Pastor and Officers

The Pastor and Officers are appealing to all parents to keep their children in the sanctuary during the services unless they are "Nursery age" children.  There are no attendants in the undercroft and they could injure themselves.

We are also asking all young people not to leave the church's premises during the worship services.  Parents, please assist us in keeping our youth safe.

The Senior Usher Board has been asked to periodically check the undercroft and urge all youth to return to the sanctuary.

A Message from the Steward Board

To the St. Paul Church Family:

When we enter the sanctuary on Sunday morning, we should do so with reverence.  When the organist begins to play, all talking should cease and we should wait quietly for the Pastor to enter.

Thank you.

A Message from the Trustee Board
